the city at 36 degrees. winter weather advisories to the north and west, carroll county, out towards fredrick county, that's where we're expecting a wintery mix and could be one to two inches of snow before all is said and done this morning. we're dry right now. your morning commute is okay. but you notice down to the south starting to see the outer fringes of this storm moving towards the north. just about three hours away from the city limits and this will come in as a burst of some snow before changing over to a pretty heavy rain scenario. so, again, snow/rain mix. just about a dusting to one inch just outside the beltway. the further north and west you head, snow to ice to rain. could be two to three inches of snow. and then you go outside of thermot, garrett and washington county, could be close to a foot of snow before all is said and done. we'll talk more about the storm in your seven day coming up in a little bit. let's get a check on traffic. lauren cook in the traffic center. good morning, lauren.

this was four years after the democratic convention, the last of the big city machines were still alive and politics were really vital. i came to the university of chicago probably ill-equipped to take advantage of everything the institution had to offer. and a little frustrated because there was no is to politics. there were no outlets. i used to joke -- forgive me if the dean is here or anybody else -- that was 40 years ago. i said i could not find anybody who wanted to talk about anything that happened after the year 1800. [laughter] so i found other outlets for my interests and that i'll let was writing. i went back to new york after my freshman year and got a job at a newspaper in greenwich village. i was hired to write a political column when i was 19 for the "the hyde park harold" and it was for publication. this became the focus of my activity when i was here. and it was largely to state my interest in politics. but i did not have any life plan. i did not expect someday i would be working for the president of the united states. i did not know that i would not be a newspaperman.

today we learned home prices in the 20 biggest cities in the u.s. rose 4.3% in october, compared to october of 2011. s&p case-shiller says it's the biggest increase in more than two years. the new numbers reaffirmed the recovery in the housing market continues to gain steam. recent reports have also shown home sales, home building, and builder confidence are also moving higher. but here's a reality check. prices are still down 29% from their peak, which was hit in 2006. still, cities that took the biggest hit during the recession are now seeing the biggest increases in home prices. prices in phoenix are up more than 20% from last year. in detroit, prices are up 10%. only two of the 20 cities measured showed a decline in october, chicago and new york, but new york also had a much smaller housing bust, so it's all relative. and at this point, it's all relatively good. joe? >> you know, that's really interesting, because, not all of the signs about the economy are pointing in the same direction. retail sales didn't show so much strength. >> yeah, well,
